A perfect storm of circumstances have made it difficult for me to concentrate enough to read lately.  A great book, a roaring fire, and a dog named Thomas snuggling up on my lap all make for a perfect evening.  When I struggle  with “hearing the voice, seeing the landscape, or caring about the characters” in the books I take home I feel unsettled and anxious.  I have found that the best way to remove this obstacle is to fall back on an author that I call “candy,” something that I treat myself to when I am trying to reestablish the reading habit. Currently, my guilty pleasures include Louise Penny and Donna Leon.   For me, their books offer solace and the same warmth of home.  Because of this I dole them out infrequently and when I do their writing wraps around me and helps me escape.  I go to Three Pines or Venice; I fix myself a themed dinner and I listen to music that captures the essence of the place.   READ MORE
